The Sobrietor® is a remote alcohol breath-testing device placed in the defendant's home, utilizing existing phone and power lines. Breath tests can be done on a scheduled, random, and/or on-demand basis. It is possible to sentence offenders who commit alcohol related crimes to sobriety with the Sobrietor. The Sobrietor® utilizes fuel cell technology and voice verification software to provide valid breath-alcohol readings and verification of the offender's identity during the test. Multi-language versions of the Sobrietor® allow for flexibility of use in both English and Spanish language environments.

Community Health Services offers the BI Sobrietor® remote alcohol testing product for conducting breath alcohol testing. Sobrietor can be used by the agency as a stand-alone unit for those clients who are not on electronic monitoring. The Sobrietor does more than detect alcohol. It actually measures the blood alcohol level of the client by utilizing fuel-cell technology - the same testing technology used by law enforcement in roadside sobriety checks.

The Sobrietor unit is placed in the offender's home, where it will perform a test at intervals specified by the corrections official. The officer may specify testing at fixed time periods, random times within a specified time period, or testing upon returning home (when used with BI electronic monitoring equipment.)

Community Health Services will fax or email, seven (7) days per week, a daily report for activity of each participant to designated fax numbers and/or addresses provided by the referring agency, court, or probation officer. All data shall be printable in various report formats as required.

At the time of the actual test, the client's voice is compared to a calibration template prepared during initial enrollment. The recording must match the template and the security level chosen that was established at the time of installation, in order to pass the voice verification. Should the client have difficulty, the instrument will automatically give the client a limited number of retries. In addition to limiting the number of retries, the Sobrietor also attempts to assist the client in understanding how they might improve their voice verification. This prompting insures that the voice verification process is consistent and repeatable.

To use the Sobrietor, physical contact of the Sobrietor mask to the client's face is required. The Sobrietor mask must be correctly positioned against the client's face and must maintain contact with the client's face until testing is complete. When the mask is positioned around the mouth, multiple proximity sensors register the presence of the face. If the mask is removed from the face during the voice verification and testing period, the test will be reported as a mask failure. Sobrietor stores the last failed voice recognition, helping to identify uncooperative offenders.
